Gunfire on Christmas near the downtown area left one man dead, Fort Wayne police said Wednesday.

Officers were called just after 6:30 p.m. upon receiving reports of shots fired near the intersection of West Fourth and Wells streets. Shortly after, they were dispatched to the 1600 block of Wells Street.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, a news release said. Fort Wayne firefighters and TRAA medics rendered aid but the male was pronounced dead.

An investigation into the deadly shooting continued into the evening, including Fort Wayne Police Department homicide detectives, an aerial support unit and the Allen County coronerapps office.

The shooting on a day many people were celebrating the holiday with family and friends comes after Allen County had its 40th homicide declared Dec. 18. In that incident, a 51-year-old Fort Wayne man was killed Dec. 17 in an officer-involved shooting in Huntertown.

Most of the countyapps homicides this year have involved gun violence.
