A 22-year-old was arrested Thursday on charges stemming from a July 4 fireworks incident that injured a young girl.

The Fort Wayne Police Department said Ian Douglas Wiggins faces preliminary charges of battery to a person less than 14 years old and also illegal possession of a firework.

While celebrating Independence Day, police said, Wiggins appdecided to hurl a firework into a group of people standing nearby.app

The firework detonated on the hand of an 11-year-old, causing her significant burns.

appShe required immediate medical attention and will bear scars from the incident,app Thursdayapps news release said.

Wiggins is accused of fleeing before police arrived.

An investigation that included the Crimes Against Persons Section and a family case manager with the Indiana Department of Child Services led to an arrest warrant for Wiggins. He was apprehended Thursday afternoon by members of the Allen County Warrants Division.
