Even if your company brand, hiring process and skills help you land top talent, the key question is whether you can keep it.
So much is at stake with onboarding app the steps you take to really introduce a new employee into your organization, a BambooHR onboarding guide says. It typically costs at least $4,000 to hire a new employee. The expense can be even greater for some management and executive positions.
In the first six months of this year, employment in the U.S. grew by an average 278,000 jobs per month, continuing a streak of 30 consecutive months of job growth, the company said in another report.
Within the first month, 70% of new hires decide whether a job is the right fit, including 29% who know within the first week.
On average, companies have 44 days to influence a new hireapps long-term retention, according to BambooHR, which this year surveyed 1,565 full-time employees, including human resources professionals, about onboarding.
A good job description will catch the attention of a potential employee. New hires want to feel they belong and are making connections, BambooHR said.
The company, which offers software to manage payroll and benefits, recently circulated the guide appHow to Make Employee Onboarding a Top Priority in 2023.app It included information from an online survey in 2018 of 1,052 employees about their experiences.
In a survey of employees who quit, BambooHR said it found that 23% wanted clear guidelines about their responsibilities, 21% expected more effective training, and 17% said a friendly smile or helpful co-worker could have persuaded them to stay.
New hires who had a positive onboarding experience are three times more likely to feel a strong commitment to their employer, the company said.
Onboarding can last several months or up to a year, depending on roles and employers. A standard process helps new hires feel welcomed and supported and, according to Society for Human Resource Management research, can increase their productivity by up to 50%, BambooHR said.
But unlike orientation, onboarding is ongoing, BambooHR says. After the basics of crafting a job offer, completing new hire paperwork, and training on areas such as company policies and procedures, the work continues.
Ongoing support includes regular feedback, creating regular check-ins between new hires and managers and even establishing formal or informal mentors or apponboarding buddies.app
New hires will be frustrated if theyappre left to sink or swim, the onboarding guide says, and managers have the most impact on whether the process is a success.
Thirty-three percent of new hires said they wanted their manager or direct supervisor to be the one to show them the ropes.
