The Fort Wayne Police Department is asking the public for information related to a fatal hit and run Friday evening on Covington Road.

Police responded to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian on Covington just west of Getz Road shortly before 8 p.m., according to a news release.

Officers found a man lying in the road unconscious. They provided medical care until Three Rivers Ambulance Authority medics arrived. The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead upon arrival.

Witnesses told officers they saw a dark-colored SUV stop after the crash and then take off westbound on Covington.

Officers from the Fatal Accident Crash Team were called in to investigate the scene, the release said.

Investigators are searching the area for any video surveillance that might have captured the crash. Retailers, including Walgreens, Mocha Lounge and Rita°®¶¹app™s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard, have locations along that area of Covington Road.

The investigation also is being assisted by the FWPD Air Support Unit, Allen County coroners office and the Allen County prosecutors office. The coroner°®¶¹app™s office will identify the victim after an autopsy and family members are notified.
