A drug deal turned robbery led to the fatal 2018 shooting that a Fort Wayne man faces charges for, according to court records available Tuesday.

Terrence Wintrode, 25, is charged with murder, felony murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and a sentencing enhancement for using a gun in connection to the death of 25-year-old Brinden Hall-Fletcher five years ago. He was arrested Monday.

Witnesses told police they planned to buy marijuana and repay a loan owed to Wintrode the night of the shooting, according to a probable cause affidavit written by Fort Wayne Police Detective Roy Sutphin. When the witnesses and victim met with Wintrode, he got into the car with them.

Then the suspect pulled out a gun and asked for money, court records said. Witnesses said he then shot Hall-Fletcher and a struggle ensued.

One of the witnesses shot at Wintrode before they pushed the defendant out of the car and drove Hall-Fletcher to the hospital, court documents said. He died soon after from a gunshot wound to the chest.

A witness identified Wintrode as the shooter after looking at a photo lineup, court records said. The man said he had bought marijuana from Wintrode a few times before the shooting.

Six days after the shooting, Sutphin met with Wintrode to collect a DNA sample, court documents said. Wintrode, who declined to give a formal interview with police, had only one question for the detective.
