More people died of homicide in Allen County last year than in 2022, but the homicide rate remained low compared with the past five years.

The Allen County Coroner°®¶¹app™s Office reported 30 homicides in 2023. Allen County saw 22 homicides in 2022 °®¶¹app“ nearly half of 2021°®¶¹app™s rate of 49.

The five-year average is about 38. The county had 43 homicides in 2020; 30 in 2019 and 46 in 2018.

About 83% of homicides in 2022 were cleared, which means they were solved. Cases have been cleared once a suspect has been arrested, the defendant was not found criminally liable or a suspected offender dies.

The local homicide clearance rate is significantly higher than the national rate. About 52% of homicides were cleared in the U.S. in 2022, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The last homicide of the year was declared after the new year on Tuesday. Javion Jaquan Grandberry died Friday because of complications of a gunshot wound to the head. He was shot Dec. 24 in the 700 block of East Tillman Road.
