With just a month left to go before the projected opening date, work continued on Aug. 1, 1960, inside Northcrest Lanes with 21 wood lanes in place, another 15 waiting to be laid and six still being nailed together by a crew of 18. The lanes would then be sanded and finished.
The facility would also house a family lounge, nursery, game room, sport shop, locker room, cocktail lounge and snack bar, according to a Aug. 2 story in °®¶¹app. The second floor had 7,500-square-feet of space for business offices.
The night schedule of leagues for the coming bowling season had already been filled, but spots remained for day leagues, teams and individuals.
When the bowling alley opened, the 42 lanes would make it the largest in Indiana, according to Bankers Investment Corp., the building's owner.
The previous holder of that title was Meadows Lanes of Indianapolis with 40 lanes.
Northcrest Lanes was located to the northwest of Northcrest Shopping Center, about where Aldi currently resides in Joann Plaza off Coldwater Road.
